Four top-three finishes in that sequence tells you this is not a horse that is struggling or running out of its depth — it is regularly mixing it with the best in its field and coming up just short. For the team at Lewes, that has to be both encouraging and a little maddening.

Sheena West's yard in West Sussex has sent out 8 winners this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get a horse ready to win. Jockey Marc Goldstein has been the regular partner, riding Reteti in 9 of its 16 races without a win between them — but the placed finishes suggest the partnership is working in other respects. They find each other, they perform, they just need one more thing to click. At Class 4 level, where Reteti has run 6 times without winning, the competition is solid but not elite — these are everyday races, not the top tier. The win is there to be found.

Raced just one day ago and clearly in the thick of an active campaign, Reteti is very much a horse in the moment. At six, it is not young, and patience has already been required in some quantity. But horses like this — honest, consistent placers who keep showing up in the finish — have a habit of eventually breaking through. When that win comes, it will have been well earned.
