The recent form makes for interesting reading. In the last six races, Reteti has finished third, second, fifth, fourth, second, and fourth — a sequence that shows a horse running consistently around the fringes of the action. Two runner-up finishes in that stretch suggest it is competitive enough to be involved at the finish, just not yet able to force its way past the horse in front when it matters most. Racing just yesterday, it is clearly fit and active, which means the yard will not have given up on finding that breakthrough.

Jockey Marc Goldstein has partnered Reteti seven times without a win, which is a long run of near-misses for both of them. Whether that partnership clicks into gear or someone else gets the call next time out is one of the more interesting questions around this horse right now. Trainer Sheena West, based at Lewes in West Sussex, has sent out eight winners this season, so the yard clearly knows how to get horses winning — the puzzle is simply unlocking Reteti. At Class 4 level, which represents the middle tier of British racing rather than the very top or very bottom, Reteti has run six times without winning. That is the grade where it spends most of its time, and cracking it there feels like the logical next step before anyone starts thinking about stepping up in class.

A horse that has placed five times from 15 races without winning sits in a curious spot — good enough to be thereabouts, not yet able to close the deal. The longer that run goes on, the more satisfying the eventual breakthrough will feel.
