Renewable Dream

The recent form makes for uncomfortable reading. In its last six races, the best it has managed is a pair of third-place finishes, sandwiched between runs finishing ninth and twelfth. That sequence — 9-12-9-3-3-9 reading back from the most recent — tells you a horse that shows up on its day but has been struggling badly for consistency. The two thirds suggest the ability is in there somewhere; the two nineths and the twelfth suggest it does not always bring it to the track.

Jockey Gianluca Sanna has been in the saddle for all ten of those races, meaning the partnership has had every chance to click. That it still has not produced a winner is a significant footnote — though in fairness, the fault does not necessarily lie with the rider. Renewable Dream has done most of its racing at Class 5, which is the lowest tier of British racing, and has still not managed to win at that level across eight attempts. That is a tough stat to look past. Class 5 is where horses go to find races they can win, and even there the breakthrough has not come.

The yard behind it, Seb Spencer's operation in Malton, North Yorkshire, is having a perfectly reasonable season with 13 winners sent out, so this is not a stable struggling to find form across the board. Renewable Dream just appears to be one of those horses that has not yet figured out how to put everything together on race day. A 62-day break since its last run could mean it has had a minor issue to sort out, or simply that the yard felt a fresher horse might finally unlock something. Whether that freshness translates into a first win remains to be seen — but at four years old, and still racing at the lowest level, time is starting to become a factor.
