Reenie's Dream

The numbers tell a sobering story. From 15 races, the horse has won once and placed three times — a win rate of roughly one in 14. Most troubling is its record in stronger company: Reenie's Dream has zero wins from five attempts at Class 6 level, suggesting the win came in a lower-grade race where the opposition was weaker. The last six outings show scattered form with no pattern — a fourth, an eighth, another eighth, a fourth, a second place (the win), and then a sixth as recently as yesterday. That most recent run, just one day ago, suggests Bryan Smart's Sutton Bank yard is keeping the horse active and looking for the next opportunity.

There is a glimmer of encouragement in the shorter distances. Over five to six and a half furlongs, Reenie's Dream has won one of four races — a 25% win rate that is markedly better than its overall record. Shorter trips appear to suit better than longer ones. However, the partnership with jockey Andrew Breslin, who has ridden the horse seven times, has yielded nothing but frustration: no wins and a string of unplaced finishes that suggest either the pairing needs time to gel or the horse simply does not perform well for him. Reenie's Dream will need a change in fortune soon, or that three-week-old win risks becoming a lonely highlight in an otherwise modest career.
