Reagrove Lord

The recent form gives a mixed picture. A second-place finish sits in there from the last six races, which shows there is still some spark, but results of fourth, fourth, ninth, ninth, and eighth around it suggest consistency is hard to come by. At eight years old, Reagrove Lord is not a young horse still learning the ropes — what you see now is largely what you get.

Jockey Edward Austin has partnered the horse for 16 of its 18 races, an unusually loyal partnership that has yet to produce a single win together. Sixteen races is a long time to keep faith with a combination that has not clicked into gear, though it does speak to a genuine working relationship between Austin and the yard. Trainer George Bewley, based in Colby, Cumbria, has sent out seven winners this season, so the stable clearly knows how to get horses to the line first — it just has not happened yet with this particular horse. Reagrove Lord competes almost exclusively at Class 5, the entry level of British racing, going winless from 13 races at that grade. When a horse cannot find a win at the lowest level of the sport, it raises honest questions about whether that day will ever come.

Having raced just one day ago, Reagrove Lord is clearly still active and in training, so the story is not over. Sometimes a horse clicks at exactly the right moment, in the right race, on the right day. Whether Reagrove Lord has that moment in it remains the question — but after 18 races and counting, the answer is taking a long time to arrive.
