Rare Times

The numbers tell the story: one win from seven races is a 14 per cent win rate, which means Rare Times wins roughly once every seven attempts. It's the kind of record that keeps a trainer interested but doesn't yet justify serious investment. What's more encouraging is that the horse has shown it can place—three times from seven—so there's some consistency in the mix of results. The recent form is lumpy, though. Seventh place, then fifth, then a place, then second, then a place, and most recently seventh again. That's not the pattern of a horse building momentum. It's the pattern of one that finds a good day now and then but can't sustain it.

Margaret Mullins's yard at Goresbridge has sent out six winners this season, and Rare Times is part of that operation. The trainer clearly believes there is something to work with here—otherwise the horse wouldn't still be racing. But at four years old, time is not infinite. The horse needs to string together better form, find a race and a distance where it truly belongs, and start winning more regularly. For now, Rare Times remains a work in progress: capable of winning, as Down Royal proved, but not yet the kind of horse that makes a pattern of it.
