His last victory came at Fairyhouse in October 2024, about 18 months ago now. Before that, his first win arrived at Kilbeggan in June 2023. Two different tracks, over a year apart — this is a horse that takes his time between highlights. What's interesting is the form just before he went off the track: a second, a first, and a fifth in three of his last five completed runs. That's a horse who had found a bit of confidence, which makes the eight-month absence all the more curious. Whatever the reason for the break, he comes back with something to build on rather than nothing at all.

The "16" in his most recent result — that's a last-place finish, or close to it — was recorded before the break and is best set aside. Horses can have bad days, and a single poor run doesn't undo what came before it. The two placings and the win that preceded it suggest he was in decent nick heading into that spell off the track.

Michael O'Sullivan has been the regular jockey, riding him six times and winning once — that's roughly 1 in every 6 rides together, which is a reasonable return for a horse at this level. The trainer, Eoin Doyle, operates out of Mooncoin in County Kilkenny and has sent out two winners already this season — a small yard that isn't throwing horses at the track just for the sake of it. When Doyle runs a horse that's been away this long, it's usually because he thinks the time is right.

Ranger Billy won't be anyone's idea of a banker. But a nine-year-old returning from a long break, with a win and a place in his last meaningful form, trained by someone who picks his spots carefully — that's a horse worth keeping an eye on rather than dismissing out of hand.
