Raceview Road

The one win came at Class 5 level, which is where most of Raceview Road's racing has been done. At that level, the record reads one win from six races — roughly one in every six attempts — which is about what you'd expect from a horse that places regularly but doesn't quite land the blow. The problem is that the last win was two years ago now, and nothing in the last six runs has suggested a repeat is imminent. Recent form shows a fifth, two blanks, a sixth, a fourth, and a seventh — moving in the wrong direction if anything.

Jonathon Bewley has been in the saddle for thirteen of those fourteen career races, winning just the one. That kind of loyalty between horse and jockey is common in smaller yards, and George Bewley's operation in Colby, Cumbria, is exactly that — a tight family set-up that has sent out six winners this season. Six winners from a small northern yard is a decent return, and it shows the team know how to place a horse to win. The question is whether Raceview Road, returning from a fifty-four day break, can be placed right once more.

That break is perhaps the most interesting detail here. A short rest mid-season often means a trainer has spotted something — a race on the horizon that suits, or simply a horse that needed freshening up. Raceview Road has done it before: Kelso was the scene of its one moment of glory, and if the team have that track circled again, there is at least some logic to the optimism. It won't be the most fancied runner in the field, but a horse that finishes in the top few almost half the time, with a jockey who knows it inside out and a trainer who has been winning races this season, is never quite as easy to dismiss as the bare numbers suggest.
