Roger Varian's Newmarket operation has sent out 87 winners already this season — that is not a yard guessing its way through racing, that is one of the most productive training operations in Britain right now. When a stable is firing at that rate, horses in their care tend to get every opportunity to show what they can do, and the right race at the right time is usually found sooner rather than later.

Race To The Edge is still learning the job. Zero wins from three races sounds flat on paper, but a horse that has already hit the podium twice in such a short career has clearly got ability — it just hasn't quite put everything together when it mattered most. With a trainer of Varian's calibre overseeing things, and the horse only three years old with its best days presumably still ahead, that first win feels more like a matter of when than if.
