What works in Quilt's favour is the yard behind it. Trainer Ed Walker operates out of Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, and this has been a productive season — 80 winners sent out, which is the kind of output that tells you this is a well-run, well-resourced stable that knows how to get a horse ready to race. When a yard is firing like that, even the horses still searching for a first win are learning from good company. Quilt raced as recently as yesterday, so Walker clearly has the horse ticking over and ready to go again.

At three years old, there is still time. Many horses of this age take several runs to figure out what racing is actually about, and the step from placing to winning can sometimes be a small one. Whether Quilt takes that step soon is the question — but with an active trainer in good form and a horse that has shown it can finish in the first three, the first win is not out of the question.
