What we do know is that Quillan comes from a yard that is clearly in good form. David and Nicola Barron, training out of Maunby in North Yorkshire, have sent out 17 winners already this season. That is a yard firing on all cylinders, and a horse making its debut from a confident, well-organised operation is always worth a second look. Good trainers tend to know when a young horse is ready to run.
The breeding offers a few clues too. Quillan is by Kodi Bear, a sire who has proven he can pass ability on to his offspring, and is out of a mare by Caravaggio — a horse who was electrifying over short distances at his best. That combination suggests Quillan could be quick, and potentially well-suited to the kind of sharp, speedy races that two-year-olds typically contest early in the season. But breeding is an educated guess at best. Today is where the guesswork ends and the reality begins.
