What is worth noting is how Q T Pie performs in Class 5 races — the lower tier where the field is weakest. In three attempts at that level, the horse has won one and so finished in the top 3 in a third of its races there. Move up in class and the picture changes sharply. This suggests the horse may have a ceiling and that the Windsor win, bright as it was, came against horses it could outpace rather than a sign of a rising talent. Trained by Tom Dascombe at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, the yard has been busy this season with 22 winners already, so the horse is surrounded by experience. Yet 15 months without a win, even accounting for youth and the lottery of racing, is a long stretch, and the recent form offers little encouragement that a return to the winner's enclosure is imminent.
