Purple Sky

The recent form makes for uncomfortable reading: in the last six races, Purple Sky has not finished better than seventh, with placings of 7, 7, 8, 11, and 9 telling a story of a horse that has gone backwards since that summer breakthrough. The dash in that sequence — indicating a non-completion — does nothing to improve the picture. For context, Down Royal is in Northern Ireland, so travelling there and winning suggests there was genuine ability on display that day. The frustrating part is that Purple Sky has not been able to reproduce it.

There is a glimmer of something worth watching at distances of a mile and three furlongs to a mile and four furlongs — that middle-distance range where races ask a horse to truly stay. At those trips, Purple Sky has won 1 from 6 (roughly 1 in 6), which is by far the best record across any distance in the career. That 17% win rate at the right trip is actually a respectable number; the problem is that at other distances and in other conditions, the horse simply hasn't delivered.

Joe Ponting trains from Wotton-Under-Edge in Gloucestershire, a yard that has sent out three winners this season. It is not a powerhouse operation, but three winners shows it is functioning and finding opportunities. The horse typically races at Class 6, the lowest level of British racing — essentially entry-level competition — and has yet to win a race at that grade in three attempts, which underlines how elusive even modest success has been.

Purple Sky ran just four days ago and remains in active training, so the team clearly believes there is another win in there somewhere. Whether that belief is well-founded is another question. One win from 17 races at the lowest level of the sport is a thin record for a five-year-old, and the current losing run stretches back eight months. The Down Royal win proved the ability exists. Getting it to show up again is the challenge.
