Punchbowl Flyer

Trainer J G M O'Shea, based in Newham-on-Severn in Gloucestershire, is refreshingly candid about it. He has said publicly that Punchbowl Flyer simply cannot handle fast or even normal ground, and that the muddier the better — he wants to see mud flying. That kind of specificity from a trainer is useful. It means you are not dealing with a horse that is inconsistent or hard to read; you are dealing with one that has a very clear set of conditions under which he thrives, and the rest of the time he is essentially marking time.

What makes the current moment interesting is that Punchbowl Flyer appears to have found those conditions. He won at Ffos Las just this week, his most recent race, and that follows a win earlier in the season at Chepstow back in August 2025. Two wins from his last 6 races is a sharp upturn for a horse whose overall record is so modest, and it suggests he is in the form of his life right now — or at least, that the ground has been playing to his strengths.

His regular partner, jockey Charles Bishop, has ridden him 11 times without a win together, which is a curious footnote given the horse's recent success. O'Shea's yard has sent out 6 winners this season, so there is form in the camp. Where Punchbowl Flyer has consistently come unstuck is at the top level — he has run 8 times in Class 2 races, the elite end of British racing, without winning once. He is not a horse for the big occasions. He is a horse for a wet Tuesday at a Welsh track, when the ground is soft and most trainers would rather keep their horses at home. On those days, he is worth watching.
