What makes this interesting is who is behind the horse. Trainer Aidan O'Brien's yard at Cashel in County Tipperary is one of the most formidable operations in racing anywhere in the world, and this season alone they have sent out 145 winners. That is not a yard that wastes time on horses going nowhere. The fact that Proposition is in that team, and that they have chosen to give the horse a proper break of five months rather than run it into the ground, suggests they see a future worth protecting.

At three years old, Proposition is at exactly the right stage to build on an encouraging start. The long absence — last seen on a track in October, now returning in spring — is worth noting rather than worrying about. Yards like O'Brien's tend to bring horses back when they are ready, not before. The question on return will simply be whether five months off has sharpened Proposition up or taken the edge off that early promise. Given who is doing the training, the smart money is on the former.
