Trained by Charles Hills out of Lambourn — one of the most famous racing villages in Britain, where racehorses have been trained for centuries — Proof operates in a yard that has sent out 31 winners already this season. That is a yard in form, and form is contagious. Hills has the numbers to suggest he knows when a horse is ready, and Proof has given him reason to smile twice in recent months.

The first win came at Ffos Las in Wales last September, which opened the account. But it is what happened this week that is really worth noting: Proof won at Southwell just one day ago, making this a horse that is live, current, and in the best form of its life. Look at the last six runs in order — third, fifth, first, fourth, third, first — and you can see a horse that has been knocking on the door repeatedly before kicking it clean off the hinges. Two wins from those six runs tells you this is not a lucky fluke; there is something genuine here.

What makes that even more interesting is the context. At Class 4 level — a solid, competitive tier where most races are genuinely hard to win — Proof had drawn a blank across seven attempts before this recent purple patch. Zero wins from seven at that level is the kind of record that might have had some people questioning whether a win would ever come. That it has now come twice, and that the most recent of those was literally yesterday, suggests Proof has turned a corner at exactly the right time. Whether that improvement holds, only more racing will tell — but right now, this is a horse in the form of its life and very much one to watch.
