What gives the story some texture is the yard it comes from. Sir Mark Prescott is one of the shrewdest operators in British racing — a trainer famous for placing his horses with surgical precision, finding exactly the right race at exactly the right time. His Newmarket stable has sent out 47 winners already this season, which is a serious body of work. When a trainer of that calibre keeps running a horse, it tends to mean something. Prescott is not known for persisting without a plan.
Prince Kameo is still only 2 years old, which is worth keeping in mind. At this stage of the season, young horses are learning their trade — how to load into the stalls, how to race in a pack, how to settle and then quicken. A horse that finishes fourth in its third race, having come from 10th in its first, is at least moving in the right direction. Whether that momentum continues is the question, but it would be premature to write off a 2-year-old from one of the best yards in the country on three runs.
