Potters Charm

The seven-year-old has won at a rate of 54%, meaning he wins more than every other race he enters. That is an extraordinary figure at any level of the sport, but especially so when you consider he is regularly taking on the best horses in the country. At Cheltenham specifically, he has won 2 of his 4 visits — and the trainer's yard, run by Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies out of Naunton in Gloucestershire, clearly believes there is more to come. The team have sent out 61 winners this season alone, so they know what a good horse looks like, and they describe Potters Charm as someone they feel very lucky to have.

His partnership with jockey Sam Twiston-Davies has been central to the story. The pair have won 7 of their 12 races together — that is roughly 7 in every 12, a win rate of 58% — which is the kind of number that tells you they work exceptionally well as a team. After the most recent win at Fontwell Park in February, Sam was quick to point out that the horse had "gone through the race beautifully" and was only a little idle late on because he had the race sewn up. The plan now is to head to Aintree, then switch to jumping fences next season — a new chapter that the team are clearly excited about.

One honest moment from the yard is worth noting. Before a tough run at Cheltenham's festival in February 2025, Sam reported that the horse simply "didn't feel like the same horse" even before the race began, and the trainer acknowledged it was something of an afterthought entry. That candour matters — it tells you the team know this horse well enough to recognise when he is not himself, and that the five finishes in the recent form line should not overshadow what came before it. Potters Charm raced just one day ago and remains very much a horse in full flow, with what looks like his best days still ahead of him.
