The recent run of form tells a similar story. In its last six races, the best Porridge has managed is a fourth place, and the two most recent results — back-to-back eighth-place finishes — suggest things are not trending in the right direction. It raced just yesterday, so at least there is no question of rustiness; this is simply where the horse is right now.
Tracey Leeson trains Porridge from a small yard at Blakesley Heath in Northamptonshire, and it has been a quiet season — just one winner sent out so far. Porridge has spent most of its career competing at Class 5, which is the entry level of British racing, and has still not managed to win there across seven attempts. To put that in perspective, Class 5 races are specifically designed to give horses like this a chance. Finding a way to win even at that level has so far proved elusive.
None of this means Porridge is without value to the yard or to the people who follow it. Not every horse is a winner, and plenty of horses race simply because they enjoy it and are fit enough to compete. But anyone watching Porridge with fresh eyes should know what they are looking at: a horse still searching for its moment, at an age and stage of its career where that moment may need to come soon.
