What keeps the story interesting is that the horse clearly has some ability — eight placed finishes from 29 races tells you it is competitive enough to be in the mix regularly, just not quite able to close the deal. The recent form figures of 4-10-12-4-9-4 show a horse that occasionally runs into the top four but has also had its share of disappointing days, including an 11th and a 12th in the mix. Not a horse in crisis exactly, but one that has made a habit of getting close without getting there.

Shane Foley has been the regular partner throughout, riding Polar Bear in 19 of those 29 races. Together they have won 2 of those 19 — roughly 1 in every 10 — which mirrors the overall career record almost exactly. That consistency between horse and rider suggests they know each other well, even if the results have been modest. The yard behind all this is trained by Mrs John Harrington at Moone in County Kildare, a serious operation that has sent out 52 winners already this season alone. That context matters: this is not a struggling yard propping up a hopeless case. Harrington clearly sees enough in Polar Bear to keep running it, and the horse raced just yesterday, so it remains very much an active project.

The first win came at Naas in October 2022, which started things promisingly enough. But nearly two and a half years have passed since the second and most recent success, and the clock keeps ticking. Polar Bear is the kind of horse that fills out a race card, keeps the yard hoping, and occasionally reminds everyone why they bothered — without ever quite delivering the result everyone is waiting for.
