Poet's Gale

The recent form figures make for uncomfortable reading. A fifth on debut was a reasonable enough starting point, but the sequence since then — eighth, twelfth, seventh, a pulled-up run in between, and a sixth most recently — suggests a horse that is finding its level rather than finding its feet. That pulled-up run is worth noting; it means Poet's Gale didn't finish at least one race, which is always a concern when assessing where a horse genuinely stands. The most recent run came just eight days ago, so the team clearly feel there's still something to work with and are keeping the horse active.

Trainer A J Martin operates out of Summerhill in County Meath and has sent out 14 winners already this season, so this is a yard that knows how to get a horse to the winner's enclosure. The question is whether Poet's Gale can become one of those winners. With six races now on the clock and nothing to show for it, the yard will be hoping a change of trip, ground, or race type unlocks something that hasn't shown up yet. It does happen — some horses take time to find their confidence — but the burden of proof is firmly on Poet's Gale to show it belongs at a level where winning is a realistic possibility.
