Poetic Focus

The last six races tell that tale perfectly. Most recently, a second-place finish suggests the horse can still run respectably, and just days before that came another second. But sandwiched between those near-misses are some grim results: a 13th-place outing and a run where Poetic Focus could only manage 11th. Over the past two weeks, Poetic Focus has been busy on the track, which at least suggests the trainer still believes there is something worth racing for.

A. Slattery, based in Thurles, Co Tipperary, is not working with limited resources. The yard has already sent out 62 winners this season, so Poetic Focus is not getting lost in a struggling operation. That makes the lack of a breakthrough all the more puzzling. Here is a horse that has earned chances, has shown it can run into the places, yet remains winless at six years old. For a horse at this stage of its career, that kind of record usually means the writing is on the wall — but the recent second-place finishes suggest there may yet be a race at the right level waiting for it.
