Pirates Whisper

Pirates Whisper made its racecourse debut just over a day ago and finished ninth. The 2-year-old, trained by R Mike Smith at Galston in East Ayrshire, has the whole of its racing life still ahead of it, and a single outing tells us almost nothing about what it might become. Debut races are often messy affairs—a young horse can be green, distracted, or simply not yet ready to show what it is capable of. What matters now is how the horse improves and whether the yard decides to run it again soon. Smith's yard has been in good form this season, sending out 25 winners, so there is solid horsemanship behind Pirates Whisper's preparation. Time will tell whether this horse has the talent to develop into a genuine competitor.
