Pirate Island

The recent form makes for tough reading. Across the last six runs on record, Pirate Island has finished 11th, 7th, and 9th in the races it completed, with two breaks in between — and now comes a gap of roughly nine months since it last set foot on a track. Long absences like that can mean all sorts of things behind the scenes, and there's no way of knowing exactly what caused this one, but returning after nine months off is always a test of whether a horse comes back in the same shape it left.

Niall Moore has been the regular partner, riding Pirate Island in 10 of its 15 races together — and the pair are yet to win. That's not necessarily Moore's fault; a jockey can only do so much with what's underneath them. But 10 races without a win is a long run of disappointment for any partnership, and it raises a fair question about whether a fresh approach might eventually be worth considering.

Philip Fenton trains the horse from his yard in Carrick-On-Suir, County Tipperary, and the operation is clearly capable — six winners already this season shows there's no shortage of ability in the stable. The talent is there at yard level. The question is whether Pirate Island can tap into it. For a horse that has raced 15 times, earned four placings, and never won, the window for a breakthrough isn't getting any wider. But horses have surprised people before, and sometimes a long break and a fresh start is exactly what it takes to unlock something that was always there.
