Pickering Castle

The recent form makes for uncomfortable reading. Six consecutive races without a placing, until a third-place finish offered a brief flicker of promise — but since then, three more runs have yielded a sixth, a seventh, and a seventh again. That sequence, reading 6-7-7-8-8-3 from most recent backwards, tells the story of a horse currently struggling to recapture even its modest best. It raced just yesterday, so the yard are clearly keeping it busy and believing something can change.

Almost all of Pickering Castle's racing has come at Class 5, which is where the majority of everyday racehorses spend their careers. It has run nine times at that level without winning — not from 0% in terms of intent, but 0 from 9 in reality, which is a tough record to look past. The six places are the saving grace: this is not a horse that habitually trails in last, just one that cannot quite get its nose in front when it matters.

What makes the situation genuinely interesting is the trainer. David Simcock operates out of Newmarket, one of the most prestigious training bases in Britain, and his yard has sent out 39 winners already this season — a serious operation that clearly knows how to get horses winning. That Simcock still has Pickering Castle in training and racing regularly suggests he sees something worth persisting with. Whether the horse eventually justifies that faith is the open question. Right now, the evidence says it is a reliable finisher in the lower ranks that has yet to find its moment.
