Pepper Noir

The horse's two wins both came at Dundalk, in November and December 2024. Nothing strange about that, except that Pepper Noir has run there 12 times and won twice — a win rate of 1 in 6 races at that track. It is a strong record for a course, a place where the horse seems to switch on when others fade. The frustration is that Pepper Noir hasn't won anywhere in 22 months since that December success. The last six races have brought a 14th place, an eighth, two blanks, a sixth, and another failure — the kind of run that tests an owner's patience.

John McConnell's yard at Stamullen has been prolific this season with 36 winners, and Pepper Noir clearly suits something about how the trainer operates. More telling is the partnership with Gary Carroll, the jockey. Together they have won 2 races from 8 — a win rate of 1 in 4 — which is dramatically better than the horse's overall record. Carroll has worked out something that many other riders have missed, or perhaps the pair simply click.

Distance and ground matter too. Pepper Noir has won 2 races from 6 attempts at distances between 1 mile 6 furlongs and 2 miles, a win rate of 1 in 3, and wins both victories on normal ground, one of the few surfaces where the horse has shown real form. The pattern suggests a horse that needs time to settle into a race, space to work, and firm going underfoot. At five years old, Pepper Noir still has time to string together a winning run, but only if the right conditions align.
