The partnership with jockey Gavin Sheehan is worth paying close attention to. In 10 races together they have won 4, which works out at 40 in every 100 rides — or roughly 2 wins from every 5 times they team up. That is a genuinely impressive number. Most successful jockey-horse partnerships do not get anywhere close to that kind of return, and it suggests the two have developed a real understanding.

Behind the scenes, trainer Billy Aprahamian runs a yard out of Towcester in Northamptonshire that has sent out 12 winners already this season — a solid, productive operation. Pep Talking is clearly one of the stable's most reliable performers, and the fact that the yard keeps putting it in at Class 5 level — one step up from the very bottom rung of British racing — tells you something useful. At that level, Pep Talking has won 5 from 11 races, a 45% win rate. Nearly half of all its Class 5 races have ended in victory. That is dominance by any measure.

First winning at Huntingdon in March 2024, Pep Talking has developed into exactly the kind of horse that is easy to root for: consistent, competitive, and still firing at eight years old. Whatever comes next, it arrives off the back of a win — and that is as good a place as any to be.
