Penzance

The partnership with jockey Alistair Rawlinson has been central to that success. Together they've won 4 of their 19 races — roughly 1 in every 5 — which is a genuinely strong record and suggests the horse knows his jockey and vice versa. That relationship matters, and you can see it in the results. Penzance also has a clear preference for normal ground conditions, producing all four of his wins from 21 races on a standard surface. Put him in the wet and the story changes.

He's also a distance specialist. All four wins have come over a mile and three furlongs to a mile and four furlongs, winning 4 of 22 races at those trips — nearly 1 in 5. Strip him back to shorter distances and he simply hasn't found the same results. The most striking stat of all, though, is his record at Chelmsford — a track he has clearly made his own, winning 3 times from just 7 visits. That's 3 in 7, which in racing terms makes him almost a course specialist. His last win came there in March 2025, roughly 15 months ago.

The recent form is a mixed picture: second and third finishes mixed in with some well-beaten efforts, and he hasn't won in his last six races. But Loughnane is relaxed about it, pointing to what looked like a career-best run on turf at Doncaster recently as evidence that Penzance is still improving and ready for a new challenge. The target is the Cambridgeshire — one of the most competitive mile-and-a-quarter handicap races of the season, and a serious step up in class for a horse who has largely operated at Class 2 level, winning just 1 of his 14 races at that tier. He'll need to be at his very best. But he wouldn't be the first quiet achiever to turn up and surprise everyone.
