The first came at Bellewstown in July 2022, and the last at Punchestown in November of the same year — a course that carries real prestige in Irish racing. Getting a winner there means something. But that Punchestown victory was now 43 months ago, and Penny Jar has not troubled the judge since. The last six runs have produced nothing better than a sixth-place finish, which is the kind of form that tests a trainer's patience and an owner's faith.

Patrick Downey trains the horse from his yard in Slane, County Meath, and it has been a quiet season — just one winner sent out so far. Penny Jar's regular jockey is Patrick M O'Brien, who has ridden the horse in 11 of those 27 races for a single win together — winning roughly 1 in every 11 rides, which is a modest return and reflects how hard winning has been lately. Still, the partnership clearly has history, and there is something to be said for a jockey who knows a horse well.

What makes Penny Jar interesting is not the wins themselves but the sheer persistence. Raced just one day ago, still active at 10, still being pointed at races — that takes a horse in good enough health and shape to compete, and a team that believes there might be one more good day left in them. At this stage of a career, every run feels like a bonus. Whether that day comes soon is another question, but Penny Jar has earned the right to keep trying.
