His breakthrough came in April 2022 at Punchestown, but the real story is what happened nearly two and a half years later. Last October, at Cheltenham, Path d'Oroux finally broke a long drought to claim a Class 2 race in a chaotic contest where the pace was crawling until it suddenly became a sprint. Cromwell described the horse as "banging on the door" throughout the previous season without crossing the line, so this win was both overdue and vindication of his consistency. The trainer recognised he was not ready for top-grade company but had enough experience and ring-craft to compete at a level below the elite. That victory remains his most recent one — 22 months and counting.

The horse performs noticeably better at middle distances between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, winning twice from seven attempts at that trip — a 29 percent win rate that stands out from his overall record. He is a regular partner for jockey Keith Donoghue, who has ridden him to three wins from 21 races together, slightly better than his career average. In his last six races, however, Path d'Oroux has not found the winner's enclosure, most recently running eleventh just a day ago. His record in top-class races is sobering: zero wins from four attempts, which explains why Cromwell now plans to use graduation races — contests for horses moving up in trip or experience — as his hunting ground. Carlisle looks like the intended target, a race the horse finished third in last year. For a nine-year-old with his profile, these smaller peaks matter far more than chasing distant summits.
