Paradise Lost

That one win came at Roscommon in October 2024, and it remains the solitary highlight of a career built largely on placing. Eight times Paradise Lost has finished in the frame without winning — a reminder that it is no stranger to the business end of a race, it just rarely gets its nose in front. The win at Roscommon now sits over 20 months in the past, and the last six runs have all ended without a victory, with finishes of seventh, fifth, fifth, third, third, and fifth. The thirds offer a flicker of hope; the fifths rather snuff it out again.

The most interesting part of Paradise Lost's record is what happens when the race gets properly demanding. Over its preferred trips — between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, where staying power really counts — it has won 1 race from 10, a 10% win rate. That's one in every ten starts at those distances, which is meaningfully better than its overall record and suggests the horse has a gear that only appears when asked to really stay. The problem is that gear hasn't been enough lately.

Gavin Brouder has partnered the horse seven times without getting a win, which is a difficult run for any regular partnership to sustain. Trainer Charles O'Brien, based in Straffan in Co Kildare, has had just one winner from his yard so far this season, so this is not a stable currently firing on all cylinders. Paradise Lost raced just one day ago, which means it is clearly in active work and being kept busy — sometimes horses find form through regular racing rather than long gaps, so the the yard will be hoping that rhythm eventually clicks into something more rewarding. For now, though, the name feels fitting: a horse with the talent to place repeatedly, but the prize always just out of reach.
