The problem is that it happened 31 months ago, and nothing quite like it has happened since. Orne's overall record reads 2 wins and 7 places from 23 races — wins roughly 1 in every 12 races across its career — and the last six outings have brought nothing better than a fourth place. A finishing position of 13th most recently, then a third, then a 12th, then a seventh and a tenth. It is an uneven, frustrating picture.

The clearest signal in the data is how well Orne performs over seven furlongs to a mile — that is, races of roughly a minute to a minute and a quarter in duration. At those distances, the record reads 2 wins from just 5 races, meaning it has converted 40% of its opportunities. That is a striking number. The difficulty is that Orne mostly competes at Class 1 level, the very top tier, and has managed only 1 win from 8 races there — roughly 1 in 8. It is spending most of its time in the toughest races on the calendar, which makes life hard.
