The recent form makes for difficult reading. Looking at the last six races from most recent backwards, the pattern is largely one of mid-field finishes and trailing the field, with only a second-place finish offering any encouragement. That solitary runner-up slot is the closest Orinoco Walk has come to a winner's enclosure, and it now sits some way back in the rear-view mirror. Since then, it has been ninth, fifth, and seventh — solid enough not to embarrass, but nowhere near troubling the horses at the front.
What makes this notable is the age factor. At eight years old, Orinoco Walk is not a young horse still learning the game. Most horses at this stage have either found their level and are winning races at it, or they have given us a clear picture of what they are. The picture here is of a horse that competes honestly but has not yet found the combination of conditions and circumstances that unlocks a win. Raced just yesterday, there is clearly still an appetite from the team to keep trying, which says something — you do not keep running a horse eight times if you have given up on it entirely.
Whether that belief is rewarded remains to be seen. For now, Orinoco Walk is one of those horses that keeps showing up, keeps running its race, and keeps leaving its supporters just short of a celebration.
