The most striking number in his record, though, is the one attached to a specific surface: on normal ground, Oriental Prince has won 7 of his 18 races — that is 39%, or almost 2 in every 5 outings. That is not a preference, that is a superpower. Find him the right conditions and he becomes a different horse. It also makes the trainer Jim Goldie's current dilemma understandable. Goldie, whose yard in Uplawmoor, Lanarkshire, has sent out 88 winners this season alone, has said openly that he is at a crossroads with Oriental Prince — unsure whether to push harder or ease back, conscious that the all-weather and turf bring out slightly different versions of the horse.
His course record at Southwell is the kind of stat that makes punters sit up: 2 wins from just 3 races. When a horse wins two-thirds of its visits to any track, there is clearly something about that place — the surface, the layout, the distance — that suits it down to the ground. Jockey Paul Mulrennan, who has partnered Oriental Prince in 16 of his 35 races and won 4 of them, said after one victory at Haydock that the horse "hasn't stopped improving yet" — which, if true, means the best may still be ahead.
The one soft spot in the record is hard to ignore. At Class 3 level — one step below the very top races — Oriental Prince has run 7 times and won precisely none of them. That gap between what he can do at his own level and what he manages when the competition sharpens is the central puzzle. Goldie hinted at something interesting when he mentioned strong sectional times at Musselburgh last month in a competitive race, suggesting there is still quality in there even when the result does not show it. His last win came at Newcastle in November 2025, eight months ago now, and his recent form reads 4th, 7th, and 20th in his last three. The 20th is a blip — horses have bad days — but the sequence overall suggests a horse searching for the right opportunity. Given his record when everything clicks, it would be unwise to write him off.
