There is nothing to read into that result just yet. First races for young horses are often more about experience than performance, and a tenth-place finish tells you very little on its own without knowing how many ran, what the competition looked like, or how the horse travelled through the race. What matters more right now is what comes next.
What does give some encouragement is who has the horse in their care. Charles Hills trains out of Lambourn in Berkshire and has sent out 29 winners already this season — that is a yard in good form, and good yards tend to have a clear sense of which horses are worth persevering with and which ones they quietly move on from. Or Ever is still in the game, which means Hills and his team clearly think there is more to come. At two years old, there is every reason to believe this horse is only just getting started.
