Trained by Murty McGrath at East Malling in Kent, Onlyriversrunfree operates mainly at Class 5, which is the entry level of British racing — the kind of races where most of the field are horses still trying to prove themselves. Despite that relatively modest stage, the horse has drawn a blank in all three races at that level. McGrath's yard has sent out just one winner this season, so this is not a stable currently firing on all cylinders, and that context matters when trying to make sense of the horse's results.

The recent improvement in finishing positions — from deep in the field in earlier races to placing in the last two — is probably the most interesting thread here. A tenth, seventh, and eleventh earlier in the sequence suggested a horse that was struggling to land a blow at all. Finishing second and third more recently is a meaningful step forward, and with the horse having raced as recently as yesterday, the yard clearly feel there is more to come. Whether Onlyriversrunfree can convert that improvement into an actual win remains the question — but for the first time in a while, it looks like a reasonable one to ask.
