That's a meaningful jump from his overall numbers, and it signals a horse who knows what suits him. Send him shorter or longer and the results thin out; get him in the right conditions and he's competitive.

Trained by Natalia Lupini out of Banbridge in County Down, Ohmali is part of a yard that has hit real form this season, sending out 15 winners — no small feat for an operation based in the north of Ireland. His recent runs show a horse knocking on the door: four fourth-place finishes in the sequence before that Gowran Park breakthrough suggest he was placing consistently without getting his nose in front. The win, when it came, wasn't a fluke — it was the reward for a string of honest performances. He raced again just yesterday, which means the team clearly believes there's more to come from him.

At 4 years old, Ohmali is at the age where horses tend to find their level and, ideally, their best form. The Gowran win was seven months ago, so the next task is proving he can do it again. The profile of a horse who wins 1 in 5 at his preferred trip, but only 1 in 12 overall, is one of a horse who needs things to fall right — but who absolutely can when they do.
