The recent form tells an interesting story. Reading the last six races from most recent back — 5, 5, 1, 1, 2, 3 — you can see a horse that was building nicely through a place and a runner-up before back-to-back wins, and has since finished fifth twice. That dip in her two most recent runs might simply reflect a step up in class or a change in conditions, but with a yard in this kind of form, they'll have a plan.

That yard is Simon and Ed Crisford, based in Newmarket, the heartland of British flat racing. They've sent out 79 winners already this season — that's not a stable going through the motions, that's a serious operation firing on all cylinders. When a stable like that keeps running a horse, it's usually because they believe there's more to come.

Novelette's two wins came at Great Yarmouth in July and Sandown Park later the same month, two tracks with quite different characters — Yarmouth is a flat, straightforward seaside circuit, while Sandown has a demanding uphill finish. Winning at both suggests she's no one-trick pony who only thrives in specific conditions. She competes mainly at Class 5 level, which is the entry-level tier of British racing, and has won 1 of her 3 races there. That's a solid foundation, and at just three years old, the ceiling is still very much unknown.
