That said, a single race tells you almost nothing about a young horse. Two-year-olds are essentially teenagers figuring out what they're supposed to be doing, and finishing eighth first time out is hardly a verdict on what's to come. The interesting detail here is who's doing the training. William Knight's yard in Newmarket has sent out 28 winners already this season, which suggests a stable in good form and with genuine ability to get horses ready to race. Newmarket is the heartland of British racing — if you're going to learn the game, you could do a lot worse than to be stabled there.
