Noble Champion

What makes Noble Champion genuinely interesting is the distance question. Over seven furlongs to a mile, the record reads two wins from five races — a 40% success rate. That is a remarkable number at this level. Ed Walker, who trains the horse at Upper Lambourn and has sent out 76 winners already this season, has worked out exactly where this horse belongs. After the Ascot win, Walker was tempted by bigger targets — the Guineas was mentioned — and tried a mile at Goodwood. It went wrong. Not enough pace in the race, the horse was keen, and it all unravelled. The lesson was learned the hard way.

Then came setback after setback. A problem in January disrupted preparation for the Greenham. Then an injury at Goodwood put him on the sidelines for an extended stretch. The recent form line — sixth, ninth, a blank run, then that winning return, a seventh and a third — tells the story of a horse that has been stop-start for some time. But Walker has been patient and clear-eyed about it. The plan now is to wait for the Spring Trophy at Haydock, a race at seven furlongs, and resist the temptation to rush him back at six or stretch him to a mile again.

The trainer's own words during a stable tour in April 2026 were quietly confident: Noble Champion seems to have made a full recovery from the Goodwood injury, and Walker believes the horse was genuinely going places before it happened. At four years old, with a Royal Ascot win already on his record and a yard in excellent form around him, there is every reason to think the best of Noble Champion may still be ahead of him. The Spring Trophy will tell us a great deal.
