Night Shining

What keeps this interesting is who is doing the waiting. Night Shining is trained by George Boughey at Newmarket, one of the most prominent yards in British racing right now. Boughey's operation has sent out 99 winners already this season, which is a remarkable volume — that is the kind of number that puts you in serious contention for a trainer's title. Running a yard that fires in winners at that rate means Boughey knows what a horse needs to perform, which makes Night Shining something of a puzzle. The horse is clearly in capable hands; it just has not clicked yet.

At three years old, there is still time. Horses of this age are still maturing physically and mentally, and it is not unusual for one to take five or six races before it finds its feet. The fact that Night Shining raced just one day ago suggests the team is keeping it busy and actively looking for the right opportunity rather than stepping back. Whether that persistence pays off is the question worth watching.
