The first win came at The Curragh in August 2023, which is significant in itself — The Curragh is Ireland's most prestigious flat racing venue, the place where champions are made and reputations established. That a horse picks up its first career victory there rather than at a smaller track suggests it had genuine ability from early on. The second win arrived this week at Cork, meaning Navassa Island goes into its next race on the back of a fresh victory and in the kind of form that makes it worth watching closely.

The recent run of results tells a mixed story. Reading the last six races from most recent backwards — a win, then a near-miss in second, then two poor efforts in tenth and ninth, then fourth — you can see a horse that goes missing for spells before suddenly producing the goods. That inconsistency is the puzzle, but the comeback win at Cork suggests something has clicked. Trainer M D O'Callaghan, based at The Curragh in Co. Kildare, has sent out 21 winners already this season, so this is a yard in strong form and clearly capable of placing a horse to best effect.

The one area where Navassa Island has yet to deliver is at the very top level. In five races at Class 1 standard — the best races in the country — the record reads zero wins from five attempts, a blank sheet. That is not unusual for a horse at this level of the sport; Class 1 fields are brutally competitive, and simply being good enough to run in them is its own kind of credential. But it does suggest Navassa Island is a horse that wins when the conditions suit, rather than one that rises to the biggest occasions. Whether this week's victory changes that trajectory is the interesting question.
