That one win came at Sedgefield on 14 November 2024, and it remains the solitary highlight of a career that has now stretched across two decades of racing experience without adding to the tally. Seventeen months have passed since that day, and the six races since have brought a sequence of 5th, a gap, 4th, 5th, 3rd, and 2nd — close enough on occasion, but not close enough to matter. At Class 5, the level where Natural Ability most regularly competes — the entry-level tier of British racing — the record reads one win from seven races, or roughly 1 in 7, which tells you this is a horse that belongs in that grade but rarely dominates it.

The partnership with jockey Danny McMenamin has produced that single win from eight races together, a win rate of around 1 in 8, or 12%. That is actually a more respectable return than the overall career number suggests, and McMenamin clearly has a feel for the horse. Trainer Chris Grant, based at Billingham in Cleveland, has sent out four winners so far this season — a yard that produces results at the right moments, even if modestly. Natural Ability is still active and racing, which at eight years old says something about durability if not brilliance.

Sedgefield, then, is the place where everything came together once. Whether it can happen again there is the most interesting question around this horse right now. Form is patchy, wins are rare, but the pieces — a familiar jockey, a track that has been kind before — are at least in place.
