The win arrives after a patient build-up. Across seven races, Naranka has one win and two placed finishes — a record of roughly 1 in every 7 races, which is modest on paper but tells only part of the story. The recent form makes for more interesting reading: finishing fifth twice, then seventh, then eleventh suggested a horse still finding its feet. But back-to-back placed runs followed by this week's win shows a horse that has clicked into form at exactly the right moment.

George Baker's yard has been in decent shape this season, sending out 14 winners, and Naranka's breakthrough adds to that momentum. Baker trains out of Epsom Downs itself, which means Naranka will have worked over the same quirky, undulating track many times in training — and that familiarity may well have played a part in finally getting the job done there. Epsom is one of British racing's most unusual courses, with a famous camber and a downhill run that catches plenty of horses out. Knowing the place matters.

With Naranka still only three years old and having just posted its best recent run at the right end of the season, there is plenty of racing still to come. One win from seven races is a foundation, not a ceiling.
