Mythical

The numbers are stark. In 24 races, Mythical has never once crossed the line first, managing only two placed finishes to show for all that effort. That is a long road to travel for so little reward. Recent form offers no encouragement either — the last six runs have produced nothing of note, with finishes of seventh and eighth among the recorded positions, and the horse raced just yesterday, so this is very much an active story rather than a historical one.

Phil Dennis has partnered Mythical more than anyone else, riding together eight times without a single win between them. At Class 4 — a mid-level tier where horses are not exactly competing for the sport's biggest prizes — Mythical has had 11 chances and come up empty every time. That is not a horse that is simply being placed in races too tough for it. These are races specifically chosen to give a horse a realistic opportunity, and still the winning post remains out of reach.

Some horses find a niche, a track or a set of conditions where everything clicks. For Mythical, that moment has not arrived in 24 attempts. Whether it ever will is the quiet question hanging over every future entry.
