Camacho, based at Norton in North Yorkshire, has been patient with him. She has always rated him highly, but when he started disappointing on the track, the team went looking for answers. A small procedure to improve his breathing appears to have unlocked something — and the Doncaster win was the payoff. Her yard has been in terrific form this season, sending out 46 winners, so when she singles out Mystical Storm as her personal pick, that carries some weight.
His best racing comes over five to six and a half furlongs. In the three races he has run over that trip, he has won one — roughly 1 in 3, which is a strong return for a horse of his class. The fact that his longer-distance outings and his six races at Class 4 level have produced nothing suggests trip and conditions matter more to him than they do to most. At the shorter, sharper distances, he is a different animal.
Recent form reads 4-8-9-10-6-3 going back through his last six runs, which on the face of it looks uninspiring. But the third place most recently, followed by that Doncaster win, hints at a horse returning to his best just as summer proper arrives. Jockey Ryan Sexton has been in the saddle for ten of his eleven races, winning once together — 1 in 10, or about 10% — a modest number, but the partnership clearly has continuity and trust behind it. With a possible step up to seven furlongs at York on the cards, and Camacho convinced the flat, galloping nature of that track suits him, the next few weeks could be the most interesting of Mystical Storm's career so far.
