What makes the situation interesting is the stable behind it. Mystic Wind is trained by Dan Skelton at his yard in Alcester, Warwickshire — one of the most productive operations in British racing right now. With 198 winners already sent out this season, Skelton's team is firing on all cylinders, which makes Mystic Wind something of an outlier among its stablemates. When a yard is winning at that kind of volume, the horses that haven't clicked yet tend to stand out.
The fact that Mystic Wind raced just yesterday and is clearly still in active training suggests Skelton hasn't given up on finding the right opportunity. Sometimes it takes a horse a little time to work out what racing actually asks of it. Three races is still a short audition, and the step up from seventh to fifth in the most recent run — modest as it sounds — at least points in the right direction. Whether there's more improvement to come is the question Skelton will be trying to answer.
