Mystic Moment

Distance has been a key part of the puzzle. Trainer Neil Mulholland spotted early on that six furlongs was probably too sharp for her. At Goodwood she led the field before being outpaced in the final two furlongs, only to come back strongly in the closing stages — a classic sign of a horse who wants more time and space to build into her effort. Moving her up to seven furlongs and a mile unlocked something: she has won 1 from 7 races at those distances, a 14% win rate, and that sole victory came over that trip at Epsom. For a horse who had been knocking on the door, getting the distance right made all the difference.

The challenge now is that her best form has come below the top level. In Class 2 races — some of the most competitive in Britain — she has run three times without winning, going 0 from 3. Her most recent run came just yesterday, so she is very much in active training, and with Mulholland's yard having sent out 60 winners already this season, the team clearly knows how to place a horse to best effect. The key will be finding races where her stamina and consistency can be rewarded rather than asking her to beat the very best before she is ready. She has the places on the board. The wins may follow.
