Patrick Neville, her trainer at Coverham in North Yorkshire, is candid about the challenge she presents. She lacks straightforwardness, he explains, but the yard is making progress with her. The problem, it seems, is temperament as much as ability: she's been too eager, too keen to get on with racing rather than settle into the rhythm required to perform. Neville has begun experimenting with equipment — a hood, which can have a calming effect — hoping it helps her find the relaxation she needs. His tone suggests patience rather than frustration; this is a horse who simply needs time to mature and understand what's being asked of her.
At Class 5 level — the lowest rung of competitive racing in Britain — Myfavouritesister has failed to win from eight attempts, which speaks to a significant gap between her ambitions and her ability on the day. Yet the two places from her career show she's competitive enough to finish in the frame, and Neville's yard has been successful this season, sending out 28 winners. The trainer knows what he's doing, and clearly believes she has something to offer if they can simply get her mind right. For now, Myfavouritesister remains a work in progress.
