The yard behind the debut is worth noting too. Kevin Ryan trains out of Hambleton in North Yorkshire and has already sent out 45 winners this season — a figure that tells you this is an operation running at full tilt. Ryan has a strong reputation for placing young horses cleverly and knowing when they are ready to run, so the fact that My Mate Fitz has been declared is itself a small signal of confidence. First-time-out horses are always a leap of faith for anyone watching, but when they come from a yard firing on all cylinders, it at least narrows the unknowns a little. Everything else will be answered on the track.
