Trained by John Joseph Hanlon out of Bagenalstown in County Carlow, My Cullen operates in the lower tiers of the sport, spending most of its time in Class 5 races — the level where horses are competing for modest prizes and looking for any edge they can find. Despite five attempts at that level, a win has remained out of reach. Hanlon's yard has been in decent form this season with 11 winners, so the ammunition is there — My Cullen just hasn't been the one to fire.
Brendan Powell has been the regular partner, riding My Cullen in 7 of its 17 races without a win between them. That kind of consistency in the saddle usually helps a horse find its rhythm, but so far the combination hasn't clicked into a victory. Recent form has been patchy too — a fifth and a tenth in the last couple of completed runs, with a couple of blanks in between, and a finish well down the field before that. It's not a horse that looks to be building toward something right now.
What keeps My Cullen relevant is the simple fact that it raced just yesterday and is clearly still an active part of Hanlon's plans. At 6, it's not young, but it's not finished either. Somewhere in those 17 races and five placed efforts is a horse that is capable of being competitive — the question is whether the right race on the right day finally comes together.
