My Cullen

The recent form makes for tough reading. In its last six outings, the best result was a sixth, and two of those runs produced finishes outside the top ten. It raced just yesterday, so there is no shortage of effort from the yard — John Joseph Hanlon's operation in Bagenalstown, Co Carlow has been active enough this season, sending out 11 winners, which shows the stable knows how to win races. My Cullen just hasn't been the one delivering them.

Regular jockey Brendan Powell has partnered the horse seven times without success, going winless across all seven of those rides. That kind of consistency — in the wrong direction — tells you this is a partnership that works hard but hasn't yet clicked into a winning moment. My Cullen tends to run in Class 5 company, which is the entry level of British racing, and has still not managed a win there across five attempts. When a horse can't win at the lowest level of the sport, it raises honest questions about whether a victory is coming at all.

None of that means My Cullen is without value to its team — placed finishes pay out, and a horse that keeps racing at six years old is clearly sound and willing. But for now, it remains one of racing's nearly-horses, showing up, putting in the effort, and waiting for a day that hasn't arrived yet.
